Which of my photos should I offer as prints?

Hey everyone,

I haven't been very active on dA lately, but all that is about to change. I'll be going through my message centre over the next few weeks and seeing what you've all been up to during my absence.

In the meantime, I'd love it if you could help me decide which of my photos I should offer as prints.

If you had a voucher to buy 3 of my photographs, which would you pick?

I'm really looking forward to hearing your opinions! Use the comments to tell me which 3 you would recommend from your own gallery, too.

Thank you in advance! And fill me in on what I've missed over the past few months :)

Your attention, please!

EDIT: Putting "Crow" up the top of my journal was a bad move, the +fav count has almost doubled! You bastards :D

I've been silent on this matter for long enough. My "WTF?" levels are reaching dangerous levels.

I know I haven't been very active here lately, for too many reasons to count, but I do keep a bit of an eye on my message centre. And aside from the occasional exception, I'm always completely dumbfounded by the deviations that are being singled out as +favs.

My most +faved deviation, by FAR, is this piece of crap:

I quite like it despite its lack of focus, but it's completely mediocre in just about every way imaginable. I like to think I've improved since then.

Coming in second is my Goose Feet, which is more understandable. My chronic laziness has meant that its stint as a featured deviation has lasted about 2 years now, so it was bound to attract a little more attention. This is the sort of shot I expected people might like.

Following those two are a string of crappy snapshots, most of which reside in my scraps. The common denominator appears to be the cuteness of the subject, rather than the quality of the image. Also, the trend seems to be for complete strangers to +fav a single shot and move on, seemingly without checking out what else is on offer (if my "recent visitors" list is anything to go by).

I'm discouraged, to tell you the truth. I have stopped submitting here as frequently because I'm trying to be more critical about my own work, and only submit the stuff I'm truly proud of. And when these more challenging images are overlooked in favour of the cute animals in my scraps, it makes me wonder if I'm really improving at all.

I do understand the value of a simple snapshot, much as I understand the appeal of a pop song whose 4-word lyrics repeat 150 times. I suppose I just aspire to something less disposable. I also believe that we should be free to +fav the things we like, whether they're exceptional in terms of technical skill or just pleasing to the eye. What I object to is my stats resembling a petfighter.com profile. KnowwhatImean?

I mean, even my one and only Daily Deviation resides in my scraps! Perhaps I have it all backwards?

In the spirit of trying to turn this rant into something productive, let me suggest a few deviations that are rotting away at the bottom of my stats.

There are even some super cute animals in there, for those just looking for a new wallpaper!

Look, I have a pretty healthy sense of humour about all this, but the underlying message still applies. I guess it's something we should all keep in mind when visiting another deviant's gallery: if you arrive there via somebody else's random favourites, take the time to have a look around the rest of their gallery as well and make critical decisions about what you +fav. If we don't, the "most popular" deviations on the front page will continue to be (for the most part) pretty average, and I'll have to write another whiny rant.

AND NOBODY WANTS THAT.

Thanks for letting me complain :)

New website: Scarlet Words

New blog - Scarlet Words

I have opened a new website at Scarlet Words for my blog. Please visit and leave a comment because it's really lonely over there!

Scarlet Arts has not been abandoned. Next on my to-do list is to turn it into a portfolio/shop site, but I'm having trouble finding the right cart software (at the right price) that calculates Australian GST. If you've found a solution yourself, or know of an Australian-based art/music/whatever site that is currently doing things well, please point me in the right direction! I'm really happy with my preliminary site design, and finding the right cart software will really help me knock over this project fast.

Nikon D200

Edit: It's here!

Well, this is exciting! My little UPS tracker tells me that my brand new Nikon D200 is in the same state as me, so there's every chance that it will arrive tomorrow afternoon. I can't even begin to explain how long the wait for this camera has been, or how many things stood in my way of actually buying it until now. I'm positive that the wait has all been worth it.

I'm really looking forward to photographing the beautiful area that I'm living in right now, in CT. Right outside my window the snow is falling gently and turning the ground white. Snow is a complete novelty to me, and I can't wait until we get enough for me to make my first snowman! I'm also really close to both NYC and Boston (which is more Melbourne than Melbourne, for those who know what I'm talking about) and both places will keep me and my camera very busy.

Coming with the camera is a beautiful little 50mm f/1.8 AF, which is almost as exciting as the camera itself. I'm looking forward to being able to shoot very differently to the way I do with my current lenses. I think my gallery is going to look a lot different over the coming months.

My message center

At this moment in time I have 3,455 messages in my message center - and that's after clearing out new comments, notes and journals! The rest are deviations that I am yet to go through to critique and +fav, which is obviously a huge task. I intend to view each one of them over the next few weeks (there's a reason I devwatch you guys!) but comments may be a bit scarce as a result. If I add one of your deviations to my fav list without leaving a comment, I hope you'll understand.

Journal from CT

Fri Dec 22, 2006, 1:11 PM
  • Mood: Big Grin

Sorry for the recent silence on the airwaves. I sold my camera a couple of months ago, intending to upgrade, and then a series of shitty events unfolded which left me without the cash to even buy my old camera back. Not a happy time in my life, and it was pretty hard on my creativity as well.

Since then, lots has changed. I'm writing this journal from CT, USA, where I'm living with my boyfriend over the next few months. It's been amazing so far, and I'm very excited about Christmas and spending NYE in NYC.

There'll be photos eventually, because I've been working hard to raise the cash for a D200. I think I'll be buying it sometime over the next week, and then I can show you guys how beautiful CT is. There's no snow yet, and I kind of hope it holds off a little longer so that I can still get around easily to shoot. We'll see!

Happy holidays to everybody. I look forward to slowly working through my message center when I get a chance, to see what you've all been creating!

D70 + CoolWalker SOLD

Wed Oct 25, 2006, 11:55 PM

Nikon D70 and CoolWalker for sale - SOLD!

Today I sold my camera and CoolWalker just 24 hours after advertising them. Very happy that they're off to a good home, although I'll miss them both. One look through my gallery will tell you how much history we've had.

But the good news is that they will make way for my new D80! While it's not quite the D200 that I'd ideally hoped for, it's an enormous improvement over the D70's capabilities and will remove some of the limitations that I've experienced so far. Rather than spend the extra $1000 on a better body, I'd like to put it towards lenses that will expand my options. Let's face it, there are better photographers than me in this world who are using less advanced cameras.

I'll be starting with the 50mm f/1.8 AF. I'm very excited about it, particularly as it will force me to stop relying on zoom lenses to compose a frame. It will be a whole new way of seeing and behaving as a photographer, and the challenge will do me good.

In just a little over a month it'll be me and a D80 on the other side of the world for 3 months. I expect that my gallery will be seeing plenty of action in the first few months of 2007!
